‘This one looks beautiful and is really spicy. You can taste the herbs and I think I can detect some orange or caramel. It’s a bit offaly, but not bad for a factory-made product’

French Fancy
If you feel that no one makes pâtés and terrines like the French, then your prejudices will be confi rmed when you try Romy Cuisine’s range. Created using only free-range Welsh produce, they are made by chef Guy Simon, who’s 100% French.
The relatively smooth but resonantly fl avoured rabbit terrine – made with pork and a judicious quantity of cognac, white wine and thyme – transports you immediately to the French countryside. I’m certainly taking a jar when I go picnicking at Offa’s Dyke. Or maybe I’ll take the soft rillette of mixed pork and duck or perhaps even a pigeon pâté with its undertone of smoked bacon.

And if you want a ready meal, I was intrigued to fi nd that the company offers a beef bourguignon – made with Welsh black beef of course. Based in Hay-on-Wye, you will see Romy on sale at several of the surrounding farmers’ markets in the area.
